How it works

Import, convert, edit.

Three steps, inside Figma. The plugin reads your PDF on your computer and places it as layers.

  1. Step 1: Import a PDF

Run the plugin in any Figma file, sign in once with Google, and choose a PDF and its pages.

    Install the Figma pluginComing Soon
  2. Step 2: Convert it

Pick Editable, Vector outlines or Image, and check how each font will be matched before anything is placed.

  3. Step 3: Edit in Figma

Every page lands as a frame you can change. When the design is done, export the frames back to PDF.

Six short steps, nothing else to set up.

Install the plugin, connect your account, choose a PDF and its pages, pick a mode, check the fonts, import.

Each step in detail

From PDF to editable design

One page of a quarterly report, from the PDF you start with to the design you finish.

  1. 01Original PDF

Start with the PDF you already have

Choose a file in the plugin and pick the pages you want. The PDF is read on your computer, by the plugin, and never uploaded.

    • Pages one by one, or as a range
    • Password-protected PDFs open in the plugin
  2. 02Layers in Figma

It arrives as real Figma layers

Each page becomes a frame in a section. Text layers sit on the PDF's own baselines; vectors and images come in as themselves.

    • Letter spacing and line height kept
    • Fonts matched to ones Figma can use
  3. 03Edited, then exported

Edit it like your own design

Retype a heading, change a font, move things around. When you're done, export the frames back to one PDF.

    • Figma's own PDF of each frame, merged
    • Links and a bookmark for every frame

Features

Everything on the page, as layers you can edit

Reports, pitch decks, brochures, proposals, forms and magazines: what's on the page comes in as the layers you'd have built yourself.

Text you can retype, exactly where it was

Every line comes in as a Figma text layer on the baseline the PDF used, with its letter spacing and line height. Lines join into paragraphs, or stay as lines if you prefer. Lettering exported as outlines with a hidden text copy, as Figma and Canva often do, comes back as text.

Fonts, matched to what Figma has

Each PDF font is matched to one Figma can use, Google Fonts included. Where the exact font isn't there, a metric-compatible substitute keeps every line the same length. Review every match before you import, change any of them, and your choices are remembered.

Auto layout and components, when you want them

Turn on Rebuild auto layout and stacks and columns become auto layout frames, with their spacing. Make components turns exact repeats into a component and its instances. Both are options: switch them on when you plan to change the layout, not just the text.

Effects, masks and gradients, as Figma's own

Vectors come in as vectors and images as images. Drop shadows, masks and gradients become Figma's own where they match exactly; anything else is drawn as an image in place. Black-and-white scans, JPEG 2000 and CMYK colour are decoded inside the plugin, with no network needed (JPEG 2000 in Safari needs a connection).

A report on every import

After each import, the report lists every page: the characters found and how many became text, the fonts and the images. It says plainly what didn't come in, such as a scanned page that stays an image until text recognition (OCR) arrives. Copy diagnostics copies it in one click when you need help.

Back to PDF when the design is done

The Export PDF tab turns frames or a section into one PDF, in reading order. Keep each page the size you designed it, or fit it to A4 or Letter. Links between frames become page jumps, and each frame gets a bookmark. Exporting is free and unlimited, with no account needed.

Formats

PDF today. PowerPoint and Word next.

PDF works now, in and out of Figma. PowerPoint and Word are planned, each with import and export, and like PDF they will run inside the plugin, on your computer, with files never uploaded.

  • PDF

    .pdfAvailable now
    • ImportPDF pages become editable Figma layers: text, vectors and images, in place.
    • ExportFrames become one PDF, with links between frames, a bookmark for each, as designed or on A4 or Letter.
  • PowerPoint

    .pptxSoon
    • ImportSlides will come in as editable Figma frames, with their text, shapes and images in place.
    • ExportFrames will go out as an editable .pptx deck.
  • Word

    .docxSoon
    • ImportDocuments will come in as editable layers.
    • ExportFrames will go out as a .docx document.

There are no dates yet. Older .ppt and .doc files will need saving as .pptx or .docx, or as PDF, first. Until then, save a deck or a document as PDF and import that.

Import modes

Three ways to bring a page in

Choose one for each import, depending on what you need to do with the page next.

  • Editable

The default. Text comes in as Figma text layers you can retype, on the PDF's own baselines.

  • Vector outlines

Text comes in as shapes. It looks identical to the PDF in any font, but it can't be edited as text.

  • Image

Each page comes in as one image, for reference or for tracing over.

Compatibility

PDFs sent to our server: processing stays on your computer

Privacy

Your documents stay yours.

PDF processing happens on your computer, in the plugin, so your documents never need to be uploaded to our servers.

The plugin also downloads data files for pdf.js, such as standard fonts and character maps for Chinese, Japanese and Korean text: from a public CDN today, from our own site later. Those requests name the data file, not your document.

What our server receives

  • Your sign-in: your Google account's name and email
  • For each import: pages, a run number, layers and frames created, seconds taken, the share drawn as images, status and times

What it never receives

  • The PDF
  • Its file name
  • Its metadata
  • Its text
  • Its images
  • Its password

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about imports, privacy and pricing. The help page goes further.

What counts as an import?

One import is one document: up to 20 pages of one PDF, any pages you pick. A longer PDF can be imported in parts, each part an import. An import is counted only when its pages land on your canvas. Without an account, or once your imports for the month are used, the plugin imports the first 3 pages of a PDF, and that is not counted.

Do I need an account?
Not to try it: without an account, the plugin imports the first 3 pages of any PDF, as often as you like, and exports to PDF without limits. With a free account, you sign in with Google and pick up to 20 pages of a PDF for each import.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The plugin opens and converts the PDF on your computer, inside Figma, and never sends it to our servers. If a PDF has a password, it is used only on your computer, never stored or sent. When you are signed in, the server receives your account and, for each import, counts such as pages, layers and time taken; never the file, its name, its metadata, its text or its images. The plugin also downloads pdf.js data files, such as standard fonts and character maps, which name the data file, not your document.
Which fonts are supported?
Each font in the PDF is matched to a font Figma can use, Google Fonts included. Where the exact font is not available, a metric-compatible substitute keeps lines the same length. A review screen shows every match before you import, lets you pick another, and remembers your choices. More in Help.
Which browsers are supported?
The browsers Figma supports: Chrome 120 or later, Edge 121 or later, Firefox 128 or later and Safari 17.4 or later, and the Figma desktop app. In Safari, PDFs with JPEG 2000 images need an internet connection to show them.
Should I use the Figma desktop app or the browser?
Either works: the plugin runs inside Figma, in the desktop app and in Figma's supported browsers, Chrome 120, Edge 121, Firefox 128 and Safari 17.4 or later.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Pages that are only an image come in as images, and black-and-white scans (JBIG2, CCITT) are decoded inside the plugin. Turning them into editable text (OCR) is not available yet; it is planned. If a scan already has hidden text from OCR, the Import invisible text option brings that text in. Lettering drawn as outlines with a hidden text copy, common in Figma and Canva exports, comes in as editable text; fully outlined text with no copy stays as vector shapes.
Can I export designs back to PDF?
Yes, from the Export PDF tab. Choose frames or a section, and they become one PDF in reading order: Figma's own PDF of each frame, merged, with links between frames as page jumps and a bookmark for each frame. Keep each page the size you designed it, or fit it to A4 or Letter, then download the file. Exporting to PDF is free and unlimited: it needs no account and doesn't use imports.
Will it support PowerPoint and Word?
Yes, both are planned, each with import and export: PowerPoint slides into editable Figma frames and frames back out as an editable .pptx deck, and Word documents into editable layers and frames back out as .docx. There are no dates yet. Older .ppt and .doc files will need saving as .pptx or .docx, or as PDF, first. Like PDFs, they will be processed inside the plugin on your computer and never uploaded.
Is the product free?
Yes, during early access, with every available feature. Try the first 3 pages of any PDF without an account. A free account gives you 5 documents a month, up to 20 pages each, any pages you pick. Paid plans are not available yet.
When do imports renew?
Every month, on the 1st. Your dashboard shows how many you have left and the date they renew. Imports you did not use do not carry over.
What happens when I reach the limit?
Until your imports renew, the plugin imports the first 3 pages of a PDF, as it does without an account. Everything you already imported stays in your Figma files. If you need more, ask from your dashboard or tell us.
Will the product always be free?
Paid plans with higher limits may come later. We will tell you before anything changes, and you will never be charged unless you choose a plan yourself.
Do I need a card or UPI to sign up?
No. You sign in with Google, and no payment details are asked for.
